Thursday

Happy Thursday! Today has been a good day. I am so excited for one more day of learning before weekend!

Just a reminder, we will have our vocab quiz tomorrow. The only homework from today is to study.

Science:
LO: I can make inferences about different fossils, and use my background knowledge of fossils to help read a geologic time map.
Activity: We started out with a fossil activity. Each student received a back with a mock fossil in it. In their science journals, students wrote a description of their fossil and made inferences about what type of organism it may have been from, where it might have lived, etc. Students had an opportunity to share their fossil with their neighbors, and their inferences with the class.
We then watched a short video about geologic time, and how you can tell the relative age of a fossil from what rock layer it was in. After the video, we read the geologic time scale/map and students answered comprehension questions with partners.

Reading:
LO: I can explain the differences between points of view.
Activity: We started this lesson by reviewing points of view. I read three different paragraphs and students identified what point of view each paragraph was, explaining how they know. Students then read, round-robin, in their groups from Coretta Scott King, and students answered comprehension questions, comparing and contrasting this reading to My Brother Martin, which we read yesterday.

Writing:
LO: I can identify how commas can change the meaning of a sentence.
Activity: We went through a short paragraph with some humorous sentences that show how using commas can make a big difference in the meaning, even when the sentences have all the same words.

Math:
LO: I can ideantify and explain different multiplication properties.
Activity: We started this lesson with a video that explains the identity, associative, and commutative properties of multiplication. We then did a quick activity with notecards, where students were given a problem and had to identify with their group which property the problem represented. We worked through a hand out together, then students worked independently on an exit slip. We ended the class with an online computer activity as a review.

I have had a wonderful time teaching your children and am so excited about these next couple of weeks! Have a wonderful Thursday evening!

-Ms. Wilham
